The Units previous music videos

This is the units music successful music video up to the date. It was made just after the riots and gives off a very important message using the genre rap. This is an extremely effective way for the younger generations to listen to the harmful effects of what the London riots did. The editing in this video is really good bearing in mind it was made by people of our age as well as this the intertextuality is great and the mise-en-scene all comes together really well to make a brilliant music video, that could, in the future come out in the hits. It has 30, 902 views which is wicked bearing in mind they are a really small unsigned group.

The Unit at work

Despite not being famous just yet, the unit are extremely creative within their work and try the hardest they can to become successful and I would say they are definitely on a road to fame. They use every minute of their spare time doing things involving their band, they perform their music whenever they get n opportunity to and this is to make themselves known.

Key features of music videos

Key features of music videos

Music videos generally work around the music, iconography and the lyrics, which are designed to provide pleasure in order to keep the viewers watching and to encourage repeat viewings. Music videos generally fit into 3 categories; performance based, narrative based and concept based. The relationship between the lyrics and visuals can illustrate, amplify or contradict with the music. Andrew Goodwin identified the following features of music videos:

1)      Music videos tend to have genre characteristics shown within the video, for example, heavy metal bands have their music video based as a performance on a stage.
2)      A relationship shown between visuals and lyrics – which can illustrate, amplify or contradict the music.
3)      A relationship between music and visuals – which can illustrate, amplify or contradict the song.
4)      The music video will include a lot of close-ups of the artist or band members, and the artist may develop a visual style across their work.
5)      Music videos will uses the notion of looking through screens-on-screens, telescopes etc. and uses voyeurism (flaunting of the female body)
6)      There will be intertextuality references, for example, to films, television programmes and other music videos.

Analysis of music website NDUBZ

The website opens up with a video and a simple poster of the r&b rap band. This is in aim of trying to promote their music. It gives you the opportunity to buy their album/ single on itunes or play.com as these are the most popular ways of buying music in the year we are currently in. The font is all in the gangster style which goes with the band and in the top right it gives you the opportunity to enter the site.  The fact that all the attention is on buying their music as soon as you go on to their website increases their chances of sales.
The font theme goes through as soon as you enter the site. It has adverts at the top and the picture of the band is constantly behind the logo. The option of playing music in the top right is also available. It also displays latest news on the left which you can share if you want to. The options of home, news, blog, music, event, gallery, duku$, 3D, video, forum shop and links are also available at the top of the website. Typical codes and conventions of a r&b bands website are clearly displayed on this page.
The option of seeing pictures of the band behind there is a muted video playing with a what you would call comic effect making sure that not all your focus is on this video but the gallery and other things on the website.
It also has upcoming events at the bottom of the page and of course the option to share the page, a twitter feed is also available which displays everything which the band is tweeting.

The website also gives you the option of purchasing fan t-shirts online. As well as this phone cases, gift prints and accessories are also avilable.

Music website analysis

Shady Records is an American record label specializing in hip hop music. Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg founded the label in 1999 after the release of The Slim Shady LP.
Since the formation, the label has signed nine acts. It has also been part of the business venture in Shade 45 radio station via Sirius Satellite Radio, and had its own dedicated special edition magazine via XXL magazine. Tough times were seen when its record co-founder, Eminem, along with the artists were involved in very public feuds with one-time former affiliate Royce da 5'9", record label Murder Inc. and The Source magazine. The label has also seen positive times when being part of the successful international Anger Management tours and, in 2006, released an album showcasing its then roster on Eminem Presents: The Re-Up. It was also the label to be contracted for putting together the soundtrack to the Eminem-starring film, 8 Mile, which had the lead single "Lose Yourself." The song went on to take the first ever Academy Award for Best Original Song given to a song in the hip hop genre.
The labels acts over the years have earned RIAA certifications of platinum or higher on seven of its thirteen released albums. Signed acts include D12, 50 Cent, Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf and Bad Meets Evil, while former acts include Obie Trice, Stat Quo, Bobby Creekwater and Cashis.

How does eminem market himself

I have decided to investigate how eminem markets himself and how he has become so successful, reason for this is because he is an extremely successful rap artist and as we are doing rap songs I thought it would be a brilliant idea to research him.

Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP. That first album, The Marshall Mathers LP and his third major album, The Eminem Show, all won Grammy Awards, making Eminem the first artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive LPs. The Marshall Mathers LP is also considered one of Eminem's best and most successful albums. Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005. He released his first album since 2004's Encore, titled Relapse, on May 15, 2009. In 2010, Eminem released his seventh studio album Recovery, which was an international success. Recovery was also named the best selling album worldwide of 2010 joining The Eminem Show, which was the best seller of 2002. Eminem won Grammy Awards for both Relapse and Recovery, giving him a total of 13 Grammys in his career. Eminem has named Masta Ace, Big Daddy Kane, Newcleus, the Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, AZ, Nas, and Ice-T amongst others as his influences.

Eminem has opened other ventures since the beginning of his success. He founded his own record label, Shady Records with his manager Paul Rosenberg. He also has his own radio channel, Shade 45. Eminem began an acting career in 2002, when he starred in the hip hop drama film 8 Mile in which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, becoming the first rap artist ever to win the award.

Moodboard

My rap moodboard
Within my moodboard I included things that the rap genre normally includes, things such as extreme close ups, phones, the idea of voyeurism which is portrayed using girls, high designer expensive items like watches and ipads, the type of characters in the rap genre tend to look like they have high status, kind of like the rude girl/ boy character.

The camera we used

Review on the Sony Handycam HDR-XR155

This is the camera we used to film our opening sequence, this camera in my opinion is 5 star. It has advanced Exmor R CMOS sensor, which is known for outstanding low-light performance this means that you can be sure to get the sharpest image, even when shooting indoors or in the dark.  As well as this it has auto mode which automatically adjusts to whatever scene you in without you even having to do any work. It has 25x optical zoom which we only used whilst we weren't filming as we know that zoom NEVER looks good on tape, yet despite this the zoom was extremely useful for extreme close ups and in general for capturing even the smallest of detail. Images are both sharp and crystal clear.

Technology

Evaluating technology- Tripod (Sonia De Abreu)

Of course a tripod is crucial when it comes to filming unless you want a film made by what it will look like to be a dog yet there did prove to be some annoying factors with the tripod. It enabled us to film good steady shots yet when it came to turning the tripod when we were filming a shot that established our set for example you could hear the jerking of the tripod in the background which really was a let down seeing as we were not able to use that shot because of it. With technology on the increase though you can now get tripods that work with a remote control like the Sony camcorder also allows you to control your tripod with a remote control on the tripod. As well as this the tripod extends from 19-56 inches and has tilt and pan controls which are used for easy movement.

Doing work

Example of us editing on final cut express

We used final cut express to edit our piece of work. As oppose to last year final cut is much more advanced to imovie and therefore it was much better when coming to edit our media

Final cut express

Final Cut Express is a discontinued video editing software created by Apple Inc. It is the consumer version of Final Cut Pro and is designed for advanced editing of digital video as well as high-definition video, which is used by many amateur and professional videographers. Final Cut Express is considered a step above iMovie in terms of capabilities, but a step underneath Final Cut Pro and its suite of applications. As of June 21, 2011, Final Cut Express is discontinued, in favor of Final Cut Pro X.

Diary entry 5- Editing

We have finalised our editing today :) The sync looks amazing because we used Shak, who really was part of the video. We now need to just make sure the screens are always wide and add effects to the music video.

Diary entry 4- Editing process

Niki, Maria and I have started to compile all our clips together on final cut express. Michael taught us how to do this as final cut is completely new to us. We like the way in which there ware different effects,  and the way you can change the colour for instance on the clips

Diary entry day 1- Picking our locations

Today we went to look at the different locations we could use. We went up to London by train, however, we decided that to film in London didn't look ghetto enough because it was more for the skater type, as a result we have decided to film in Kingston because of a variety of reasons, a major one is its practicality.
